a review of different remote sensing methods for suspended sediment concentration estimation in different water areas

Authors valipour azadeh
Abstract    estimating sediment concentration is a vital tool for ensuring healthy aquatic ecosystems, water quality, and the proper functioning of water infrastructure. unlike traditional methods, remote sensing provides a very comprehensive picture of sediment distribution in water bodies through cost-effective methods, with the ability to estimate concentration in large areas. in this study, different methods of sediment concentration estimation were evaluated by reviewing the valid articles presented in the last decade, and while examining the main results, the challenges and limitations of each method were extracted. the results showed that among the three empirical, semi-empirical, and semi-analytical approaches for estimating sediment concentration in remote sensing, the empirical approach is the most widely used, simplest, and most feasible. while the semi-analytical approach has improved accuracy in diverse water environments, it is also more complicated and relies on the model. the statistical analysis of the reviewed articles showed that according to the type of selection algorithm, most studies were conducted on rivers (26.08%) and then coastal areas (21.73%), and the rest of the studies were focused on other water areas. also, the results indicate that landsat and modis satellites, with 26.22% and 22.95% usage cases, respectively, are the most commonly used satellites for estimating sediment concentration in the last decade. the findings of this research are very efficient in choosing the appropriate algorithms and tools to determine the sediment concentration in different water areas according to the purpose of the study, the data, and the accuracy of the results.
