Abstract    coastal changes are considered one of the most significant environmental challenges in coastal regions worldwide. these changes can be caused by natural factors such as sea level rise, erosion, and sedimentation, or be influenced by human activities like infrastructure development and unsustainable resource exploitation. the study area in this research encompasses the region from bushehr county to belangestan in the persian gulf, which, due to its geographical location and economic importance, requires precise monitoring of coastal changes. in this study, landsat 5 and 9 satellite images from the years 2000 and 2024 were used to accurately analyze coastal changes in this region. various water extraction indices, including ndwi, mndwi, awei (in both shadowed and non-shadowed versions), lswi, and their enhanced versions, were calculated using google earth engine (gee). these indices were employed to improve accuracy in distinguishing between water and non-water areas and to detect changes in the coastline. the results indicated that during the study period, significant portions of the coast experienced erosion, and the water area increased. specifically, analyses showed that from 2000 to 2024, the water surface increased by an average of 8.2%, and coastal lines in some areas advanced considerably towards the land. additionally, improved indices such as ndwi-plus and lswi-plus demonstrated better performance in accurately identifying water areas, especially in regions with dense vegetation and turbid waters. this research emphasizes that using high-precision water extraction indices and satellite imagery can be an effective tool for monitoring and sustainably managing coastal areas. the results can assist planners and managers in making better-informed decisions regarding the protection and utilization of these regions.
