Abstract

Both Khayyam and Kiarostami are poets of earth. That means a deep geopoetic sense structures their works. In Khayyam’s poems one can find plenty images of terrain and dust that invite the viewer to reflect on their own destiny on earth. Khayyam critical view toward the human will of power re-embodies in his prolific poems that remind the reader life is ephemeral, and it is the most appreciated treasure of being. In the Kiarostami’s oeuvre, particularly in his films during the 90s, this Khayyamian trend toward the life marks the journeys of the films’ main characters. In the presence of death, that is life which is the last thing worthy to be contemplated. Kiarostami’s images of terrain, particularly his paths and roads, his lone trees and unknown and invisible people who inhabits this landscape, reflect after all this Khayyamian perspective to return to the earth and appreciate life. Maybe this influence has been unconscious, but undoubtedly points to the fact that both medieval poet and modern filmmaker reaches to the same solution for their philosophical predicaments.
