Nowadays, the synthesized biopigments by bacteria possess enormous efficiency as medicinally important products. one of the most important biopigments is tripyrrole red pigment of serratia marcescens that is called prodigiosin. recent studies reported antifungal and anticancer activity for them. serratia is a gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped species of the enterobacteriaceae family, some of which are capable of producing the red pigment prodigiosin by producing secondary metabolites. this bacterium has low food expectations and grows and reproduces in low-cost environments and even hydrocarbon-rich effluents. as many microbial production processes, fermentation is used to produce prodigiosin. in this project, serratia marcescens was selected for prodigiosin pigment production. the bacterium was able to grow in temperature range of 25 to 45°c and ph range of 5 to 9. optimum temperature and ph for bacterial growth were determined as 30 °c and 7, respectively. after 30 h incubation, pigment was extracted and production rate was determined using uv spectrophotometer at 535 nm. effects of temperature, ph, time and shaking conditions on pigment production was investigated. the optimum conditions required for the maximum prodigiosin concentration were achieved at temperature 30°c, ph 8, time 30 h.
