the localization of mobile games into persian: a case study of ‘drag racing’

By bringing together areas of audiovisual translation and software localization,video games localization is an emerging field within translation studies whichhas been gaining momentum during the last two decades. the focus of attention,however, has mainly been on the localization of computer and console games anddespite the popularity of mobile phones and mobile games, very few studies havediscussed the localization of mobile games. the present study seeks to addressthis gap and contribute to the discussion. it seeks to shed light on the localizationof mobile games from english into persian and the challenges that are involvedin this popular and widely-used medium, by focusing on the localization of ‘dragracing’ (2020) into persian. furthermore, it discusses the effective factorsinvolved in the success or failure of the localization of mobile games. in terms ofmethodology, it adopts a descriptive and qualitative perspective. the persian andenglish versions of the game were played on a device and the screen was recordedin order to identify the areas where the persian and english version differed. first,a general overview is presented to establish the situation of video games andmobile games localization in iran; then, mobile games localization is contrastedwith video games localization and a short discussion is presented aboutinternationalization and globalization. in section 5, the game has been analyzedin terms of user interface, gameplay, in-game advertisements, app storedescriptions, and title.
