translational concepts under postmodernism:the case of venuti’s views

Postmodernism is a wide-ranging cultural movement that has crept intovarious fields of arts and humanities and is believed to have influencedtranslation studies as well. if we then look at translation theory from thevantage point of postmodernism and identify the traces of postmodernthinking in translation studies, a whole new world of investigation opensup. thus, the objective the present study aims to meet is to examine twotranslational concepts in the light of postmodernism and explore thepossibility of a redefinition of the investigated concepts. to this end, firstthe main postmodern concerns of two thinkers whose views representpostmodernism, namely lyotard and cixous, are explored. in the secondstep, two translation related issues tackled by lawrence venuti in hispublished works, namely abusive fidelity and translation ethics, areanalyzed using postmodern concepts in pursuit of commonality. theresults of the analysis reveal that these translational concepts, as definedby venuti, are postmodern, thus creating the possibility of their beingredefined. such redefinitions can have significant implications fortranslation practice, pedagogy and research.
