قحطی بزرگ سال (1298-1296 هجری شمسی-1917-1919میلادی) بی تردید بزرگترین قحطی بود که تلفات جانی فراوانی را در ایران سبب شد در برخی منابع در این قحطی نزدیک به 40درصد از جمعیت ایران به سبب گرسنگی و سوء تغذیه و بیماری های ناشی از آن از بین رفتند. علی رغم این که ایرانِ بی طرف، بزرگترین قربانی جنگ جهانی اول بوده است. اما قحطی بزرگ در ایران، یکی از بزرگترین قحطی های عصر جدید، و قطعاً یکی از بزرگترین فجایع قرن بیستم، ناشناخته و نامکشوف مانده است. حال با طرح این سوال که چه عواملی باعث به وجود آمد این قحطی بزرگ در سال 1296/1917 شده است؟ می توان گفت ترکیبی از مصادره نظامی، واسطه گری هنگام جنگ، احتکار و مشکلات کشاورزی و به علاوه جنگ باعث بهم خوردگی تجارت و تولید محصولات کشاورزی شده بود و همچنین احتکار احمد شاه قاجار، جنگ جهانی اول، ورود قوای روس و انگلیس به خاک ایران، خشکسالی و آفت زدگی را میتوان از عوامل به وجود آمدن قحطی در ایران ذکر کرد و تاثیر این قحطی بزرگ را میتوان بر اوضاع اجتماعی و اقتصادی مردم ایران دید.
