A Comparative Study of “The Hairy Ape” and “The Stray Dog” through the Perspective of Sartre’s Existentialism

Authors
Abstract    The twentieth century on one hand promised the realization of the ideals of its previous century, and on the other hand included the rubbles of war, the sufferings imposed by industry, and the selfishness of human beings. Among a considerable range of philosophical theories, Sartre's existentialism had a significant influence on thinkers and writers around the world. In this context, and among the masses of literary works produced in the first half of the twentieth century, some texts have structural and thematic similarities more than the mere sufferings of the contemporary man, including Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape and Sadegh Hedayat’s The Stray Dog. The latter literary text was created twenty years after the former one the other sides of the world and no connection seems to be traceable in terms of direct influence between the two. However, what made this comparative study possible is René Wellek’s The Crisis of Comparative Literature, which compelled the activists in the field of comparative literature to look at their subject from a new perspective and to research it beyond their direct influence and impacts. Following this endeavor, and given Wellek's legacy for modern adaptation, a philosophical mediator is needed whose axis can be seen in the core structure of the adapted works. The question of the primacy of existence over nature in Sartre's existentialism, on the basis of which man first exists and then realizes his nature, is quite evident in both of these literary works as we interrogate in this article.
