application of ionic liquids in gas separation: co2 capture

Environmental aspects are the main motivation for research on energy efficient processes and the search for environment friendly materials for co2 capture# in this paper, application of the one of the newest material, i#e# ionic liquids, for pollutant gases adsorption is reviewed# currently, co2 is captured by organic solvents liquids that are very energy intensive and less attractive from an environmental point of view led to emissions of the applied volatile solvent components# ionic liquids have been proposed as a hopeful alternative to the common volatile solvents, because of their low volatility and other interesting properties# this notable interest has due to a sharp growth of literature on this specific subject# the aim of the present paper is to provide a detailed overview of the achievements and difficulties that has been encountered in finding a suitable ionic liquid for co2 capture# the effect of anions, cations and functional groups on the co2 solubility of the ionic liquids are highlighted# recent developments on methods of membrane preparation including ionic are also discussed# furthermore, ionic liquids can play an important role in acidic and alkaline gas separation# ionic liquids could also solve the drawbacks of the classical solvents like high energy consumption and subsidiary contamination# in this study, introduction with ionic salts is initially investigated# different types of ionic liquids membrane and their strengths and weaknesses were also studied# thereafter, structure, particular properties and applications of ionic liquids are studied, respectively and the results of some papers in this realm are demonstrated#
