Abstractformation of mineral scales like calcium sulfate brings about notable problems such as decreasing equipment life and process efficiency in cooling water systems# to deal with these challenges, a polymeric antiscalant was synthesized through copolymerization of maleic anhydride with water-soluble monomer acrylamide (man-aam)# structure and morphology of the copolymer were characterized by ft-ir, sem imaging and edx analyses# scale inhibiting ability of the man-aam copolymer was studied according to a calcium sulfate precipitation standard test# the observation showed that the dosage of copolymer played an important role on inhibition of scale formation# furthermore, the copolymer at a concentration of 1 ppm resulted an inhibition of 96% toward the precipitation of calcium sulfate, superior to that of homopolymer with the same backbone#
