Scientific writing has recently turned into a big challenge for almost all so-called non-professional english speakers. in order to solve the problems coined by the possible challenges ahead of scientific writing, a genre-based approach was introduced to the analysis of scientific writing, such as research articles. regarding academic writing, some studies have also attempted to investigate various genres and also move structures of research article components in a variety of fields. however, contrastive genre analysis of abstracts, especially in english language studies journals in so-called iranian indexed scientific and research journals and international indexed journals, is an unaddressed niche. based on the introduced moves in lore’s imrd and also swales' cars models, the present study was to contrastively unveil the possible similarities and differences in abstract genre vis-à-vis those published papers in the two types of journals. findings showed cars' model moves such as establishing a niche and presenting present research were missing both in iranian and international published indexed journals. although none of these models were fully efficient to address all subsections, the corpus was generally more matched in imrd than cars. the findings of this study have some theoretical and pedagogical ramifications for research article developers and academic research examiners in the field.
