Digital technology has affected every aspect of our life. in the global coronavirus pandemic, all language classes have been held online. due to this policy, e-learning through the internet and various applications have come to the forefront. this study aimed to investigate teaching and learning english via e-learning during the coronavirus pandemic from the perspectives of high school teachers and students. the study further sought to find the challenges that teachers and learners encountered in the e-learning system and found some solutions to them. to address these issues, a mixed-methods approach was used. descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized to analyze quantitative and qualitative data. to this end, 33 high school english teachers and 164 grade 12 high school students from 8 high schools were randomly selected. the data were collected via questionnaire and telephone interviews. the findings from the study illustrated that although e-learning was the best panacea for teaching english during the coronavirus outbreak, the lack of infrastructure and other disadvantages caused dissatisfaction of some students and teachers leading to the ineffectiveness of the e-learning. moreover, this study presented solutions offered by english teachers and students to some of these challenges. the findings of this study can be beneficial to the authorities of the ministry of education to take action regarding the drawbacks of the virtual educational system in iran and the offered solutions in order to eliminate the obstacles of e-learning and pave the way for brushing up english language learning and teaching in iran.
