Writing effective and persuasive manuscripts, especially the abstract part, for submission to the high-indexed locally and internationally published english-language journals deserve to-the-point knowledge and proficiency, which the non-native english writers of the countries whose official and first language is not english seem to face problems. this makes it imperative for researchers to identify problems and challenges they encounter on the way. therefore, this study was done to identify the english for research publication purposes (erpp) problems, challenges, and needs of the physical education ph.d. students and writers in that respect. for this purpose, interviews were conducted with a group of physical education content experts and ph.d. students to identify the student writers’ problems and challenges. the data, analyzed using grounded theory, revealed linguistic and non-linguistic problems that the group of writers does face, including problems with the usage of technology, which should be counted as the novelty feature of this paper. the data also pointed to such problems as lack of competency in technical terminology, grammar, author guide and style of the journal to which the paper is submitted, and so on. the findings can be of benefit for material designers and instructors of the english for specific academic purposes (esap) and other officials in charge to offer right and tailor-made education to the students.
