Facing slavery, the centrality of violence is always there. Throughout history, there were millions of black people in bondage and under the control of the white. Some of their life experience was told as a novel, or they were mentioned in some literary texts. However, some of the blacks started to write their own life experience as a slave in a novel format. Twelve Years a Slave is one of the novels picturing the life of an emancipated black man, Solomon Northup, who was abducted into slavery. This novel was adapted to a movie in 2013 by Steve McQueen. This research tried to investigate the slave narrative elements in the novel and its movie adaptation, considering the adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon. Slave narrative elements were examined through the words in the book and through the themes in the movie.
