Abstract    the use of drones has expanded significantly in recent years for applications such as entertainment, surveillance, and illegal activities. as drone use increases, detecting and addressing potential threats from their misuse has become an important priority for security systems. this study presents a novel deep learning-based approach for audibly detecting and classifying quadcopters. various acoustic features are extracted from recorded drone audio samples, including characteristics captured in the frequency domain using the prony algorithm. unlike prior methods relying on convolutional neural networks, the proposed neural network architecture is specifically designed for classifying these engineered numeric audio features. this optimized design helps reduce the model size and computational demands compared to convolutional models. the performance of the approach is evaluated using a new dataset consisting of drone sound recordings collected outdoors under different flight conditions and environments. practical tests demonstrate detection accuracies over 97% and classification accuracies above 94%, evidencing the method's effectiveness. its ability to detect unknown drone presence outside the training data is also assessed, showing potential for real-world threat monitoring applications. in addition, the introduced dataset contains a diverse collection of valuable quadcopter audio samples that can serve as a benchmark resource. the study thus presents an efficient deep learning solution for the growing need to automatically sense and identify drones through acoustic signatures. this has applications in surveillance systems seeking to detect threats from unauthorized or rogue drones. the approach holds promise to inform protective counter-drone security measures.
