Dependence of the Star-Formation Rate Profiles of Galaxies to the Location on the Main Sequence

Abstract
|
We study the star-formation rate (SFR) profiles of a large sample of galaxies at the redshift range of <0.3 z <1.3 with stellar masses of 9.8 < Log stellar-mass < 11.2. The galaxies are selected from the 3D-HST catalogs over all CANDELS fields. The spatially resolved SFR maps are derived by means of the pixel-by-pixel spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using multi-wavelength observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The SFR maps and their corresponding one-dimensional profiles are compared for the galaxies above and below the star-forming main sequence (MS) and another group called quiescent galaxies. Our results show that at low redshift ranges, the SFR profiles are centrally enhanced for massive star-forming galaxies above the MS compared to their counterparts below the MS, at the same mass. This can be an indication of the bulge growth for galaxies above the MS. However, there are some hints that for less massive galaxies (log M* < 10.5) above the MS at higher redshifts, the total SFR profiles are enhanced out to larger radii compared to those below the MS. Comparing the specific SFR profiles of star-forming and quiescent galaxies show that our results are compatible with the inside-out quenching scenario.
