نشانه‌شناسی اجتماعی شاخه‌ای از نشانه‌شناسی است که به بررسی نهادها و نشانه‌ها در قالب جامعه و در متن فرهنگ می‌پردازد. منظومه لیلی و مجنون نظامی که از مهم‌ترین آثار غنائی ادب فارسی محسوب می شود، روایتگر داستانی از فرهنگ و نظام قبیله ای عرب است. در این پژوهش که به بررسی نشانه شناختی اجتماعی شخصیت مجنون پرداخته می شود، نگارندگان تلاش می کنند ویژگی های اخلاقی و رفتاری مجنون را در بافت فرهنگی و موقعیتی جامعه عرب با بررسی دال ها و مدلول ها، مورد مطالعه قرار دهند. منظومه لیلی و مجنون از منظر نشانه شناختی و از جنبۀ اجتماعی مورد تحلیل و واکاوی قرار می گیرد و به مقوله‌هایی پرداخته می شود که جلوه های نشانه شناسی شواهد آن هستند. مجنون یک شخصیت اجتماعی و فرهنگی است؛ بنابراین پردازش شخصیت او مستلزم توجه به نقش فرهنگ است. این شخصیت از لحاظ اجتماعی ویژگی‌های خاص و منحصربه‌فردی دارد و اساساً درگیر یک نوع دیوانگی و نابهنجاری اجتماعی است. مواجهۀ مجنون با پدیده‌های مختلف نظیر مرگ یا عادات خاصی مانند غذا خوردن و به‌طورکلی سبک زندگی او، ویژگی‌های نشانه‌ای خاصی را می‌آفریند و همواره بعد اجتماعی شخصیت قهرمان در داستان‌های مختلف می‌تواند تاثیرپذیر و تاثیرگذار از فرهنگ یک جامعه باشد.
