|
The world health organization (who) acknowledges that 80% of the population of traditional plants are used as an important source for the treatment of various diseases globally especially in asia and africa where many types of herbal plants are used for treatment and health care. antioxidants from plants mitigate the production of free radicals, alleviating diseases caused by oxidative stress. the rubiaceae family, including the genus psychotria, is extensively used in traditional medicine. however, the benefits and phytochemical content of psychotria viridiflora reinw. ex blume leaves, particularly its 70% ethanol extract, have not been thoroughly studied. this study aims to evaluate the phytochemical content and antioxidant capabilities of the 70% ethanol extract from p. viridiflora leaves. extracts were evaluated at 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 μg/ml. antioxidant activity is determined by calculating the % of free radical inhibition of dpph and abts. the findings showed that the ic50 produced from the dpph and abts method was 15.80 μg/ml and 4.60 μg/ml which showed very high antioxidant activity. the extract's total phenolic and flavonoid contents, 422.6950 ± 1.0762 mg/g and 12.7317 ± 0.1388 mg/g, respectively, corroborate the antioxidant results. according to these results, 70% ethanol extract from p. viridiflora leaves exhibits strong antioxidant qualities, confirming its historical medical use and emphasizing its potential for additional study and use in the fight against illnesses linked to oxidative stress.
