evaluation of hystrix brachyura geliga extract as a bioactive agent for accelerating gingival tissue regeneration in the oral cavity: an experimental model using wistar rats

In dentistry, most of treatment procedures require invasive methods resulted in injuries and wounds. research found many benefits of hedgehogs' body parts as medicines namely porcupine barbs and geliga. geliga is stone-like structures in the hedgehog's digestive tract made from the deposition of large amounts of undigested food. the aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of hedgehog geliga extract (hystrix brachyura) on healing process of soft tissues wounds of the oral cavity in gingiva wistar rats. this study was a true experimental design with post-test intervention and control group. the study was conducted at the unand pharmacology laboratory university, indonesia. study sample used 25 male wistar rats aged 2-3 months with weight of ± 200-300 grams divided into 5 groups namely control (+), control (-), treatment 1 (1%), treatment 2 (1.5%), and treatment 3 (2%). descriptive analyses were used by displaying photo documentation post intervention. the assessment found there is a vivid distinction between groups in the presence of rubor and tumor on day 4th, 7th, 14th, and 21st after applying geliga extract. in conclusion, extract geliga is effective in accelerate wound healing process in the soft tissues of the oral cavity in gingiva wistar rats. therefore, applying geliga extract could be one alternative as the medication of wound in soft tissues of the oral cavity.
