crocus sativus medical extract formulation for prevention of nervous disorders: research and implementation of saffron utilization as an alternative medicine

In this study, the purpose of the study was to test and formulate crocus sativus extract as a medical treatment such as anticancer, antidepressant, antihypertensive, anti-anxiety. the research stages include the preparation of crocus sativus simplicia, then the simplicia was characterized including testing to determine water content, ash content and yield. initial testing of ground saffron, put into a dark bottle and macerated with 2 liters of 96% ethanol for 5 days while stirring occasionally and then filtered. based on phytochemical tests, saffron extract using water solvents positively contains steroid compounds, saponins, flavonoids and phenols. saffron extract using a positive solvent contains flavonoids and phenols, the results of the dpph antioxidant activity test with water extract (ic50: 199.81) is weak, methanol extract (ic50: 134.43) is moderate and ethanol extract (ic50: 194.79) is weak, saffron extract, especially the compounds crocin, safranal, and crocetin, have been shown to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine similar to the working mechanism of antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors, these results can be considered as an alternative to complementary therapies in health services, especially for patients with nervous disorders and anxiety depression, in this case the health protocol is still applied.
