The search for safer, cost-effective, and multi-target therapeutics has intensified due to the limitations of conventional drugs, including toxicity, resistance, and limited efficacy in multifactorial diseases. phytochemicals, bioactive compounds derived from plants, are emerging as promising candidates for modern pharmacotherapy. this study aimed to evaluate the pharmacological potential of selected phytochemicals like curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate (egcg), withaferin a, azadirachtin, and eugenol, across key therapeutic domains and compare their efficacy with standard drugs. bioactive compounds were extracted from medicinal plants and assessed through in vitro assays for antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. minimum inhibitory concentration (mic), half-maximal inhibitory concentration (ic₅₀), enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxicity profiles were determined. all phytochemicals exhibited significant bioactivities. egcg showed the strongest antibacterial effect (mic: 12.5 µg/ml), while curcumin and eugenol displayed potent cyclooxygenase (cox) inhibition (>70%), comparable to indomethacin. withaferin a demonstrated high anticancer activity (ic₅₀ ≈ 18.4 µg/ml) against michigan cancer foundation-7 (mcf-7) breast cancer cells. antioxidant assays revealed strong radical scavenging activity, particularly for egcg and curcumin. comparative evaluation indicated efficacy similar to standard drugs with lower cytotoxicity on normal cells. these findings highlight the potential of plant-derived phytochemicals as safe, effective, and multifunctional therapeutic agents. their broad-spectrum activity and structural diversity make them promising scaffolds for drug development. further in vivo and pharmacokinetic studies are needed to advance their clinical translation.
