چکیده    This study aimed to assess energy expenditure in adolescents with pcos using indirect calorimetry. a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess 50 adolescents with pcos (ages 13-19 years) with varying body mass. a control group of 50 adolescents of the same age and body mass but without pcos was also included. pcos diagnosis was confirmed based on clinical criteria. energy expenditure was measured using indirect calorimetry with the reevue metacheck (korr tm, usa) device. the resting metabolic rate (rmr) was determined by measuring the fraction of oxygen in inhaled and exhaled air over a 10-minute period. the mean bmi value of patients with low body mass was 17.6±1.6 kg/m2, bmi percentile - 12.0±8.2. the mean bmi value of patients with normal body mass was 21.6±1.3 kg/m2, bmi percentile - 55.6±15.7. the mean bmi value of patients with excess body mass was 29.0±5.9 kg/m2, bmi percentile - 92.6±4.9. resting metabolic rate (rmr) data in the study group was 1758.5±363.7. it was significantly higher compared to controls – 1447.5±274.0 (p<0.001). rmr in all study subgroups (patients with low body mass - 1603.6±274.0; patients with normal body mass - 1724.2±356.9; overweight patients and patients with obesity - 2088.0±327.2) was significantly higher compared to the corresponding control subgroups. specifically, the rmr in the study subgroup of patients with excess body mass was significantly higher compared to those in the study subgroups of patients with normal or low body mass. based on the results of this study, it was conclude that energy imbalance may be a pathogenic cause of excess body mass and the development of pcos. however, it is necessary to conduct larger randomized clinical trials to confirm this hypothesis.
