چکیده

Individuals with hearing loss (hl) may experience auditory hallucinations (ah) that are often misinterpreted as symptoms of primary psychiatric disorders. understanding the neurobiological and psychosocial factors that contribute to this phenomenon is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate clinical management. this study explores the relationship between hearing impairment and auditory hallucinations to inform improved clinical practice. this analytical observational study included new patients from a private clinic in sidoarjo and the mental health polyclinic at rspal dr. ramelan surabaya, between march and june 2024. hearing loss was assessed using pure tone audiometry, and auditory hallucinations were evaluated through structured interviews using the auditory hallucinations rating scale (ahrs). data were analysed using spearman’s non-parametric correlation method to determine the association between hl and ah. a statistically significant positive correlation was observed between hearing loss and auditory hallucinations (p = 0.03). this suggests that greater severity of hearing impairment is associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing auditory hallucinations. the study reveals a significant clinical association between hearing loss and auditory hallucinations, underscoring the significance of comprehensive auditory and psychiatric assessment in patients presenting with either condition. improved diagnostic vigilance may reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and enhance treatment outcomes.
