the role of lidocaine injection and related factors on the incidence of diabetic neuropathic pain

The high morbidity rate of diabetes mellitus can result in an increased risk of developing diabetic neuropathy pain (dnp), with the prevalence rate worldwide at 50.8%. the risk factors in diabetes mellitus sufferers, such as glycemic levels, lipid profile, and high blood pressure, are a risk for the emergence of complications of dnp, which affect a person’s quality of life. this study aims to determine the relationship between glycemic status, lipid profile, and blood pressure on the incidence of dnp and the effect of lidocaine injection on reducing pain in dnp patients. this research was a cross-sectional with an analytical observational design. the sample comprised 93 respondents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2dm). the data collection were obtained from medical record of dnp patients age over 18 years in bhayangkara hospital, porong, east java. the evaluated parameters were fasting blood sugar (fbs), random blood sugar (rbs), 2-hours postprandial blood sugar (2-h ppbs), haemoglobin a1c (hba1c), total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (ldl), and high-density lipoprotein (hdl), and blood pressure. the results showed that 75.2% of respondents experienced dnp with diabetes duration of >5 years, as much as 70% (mean 8.2 ± 0.59 years). the dnp showed a significant relationship with glycemic control, lipid profile, and blood pressure (p < 0.05). respondents experienced a significant reduction in pain after lidocaine injection. so that, this variable would be beneficial as factors for controlling dnp.
