In routine diagnosis, it has been observed that the variation in staining intensity often depends on the hydration and dehydration capacity of the tissue, as well as on the professional experience of the observer. the general objective of this article is to analyze the application of sugarcane liquor (bioethanol) as an alternative resource to achieve the quality of hematoxylin-eosin staining. the methodology applied was an experimental, cross-sectional, and analytical-comparative design using simple random sampling. the population consisted of 4881 kerosene blocks from biopsies and surgical specimens from the year 2021, stored in the anatomic pathology service of the general hospital of jaén ii-1. the results indicated that the wilcoxon hypothesis test determined that no significant differences were found in the staining quality scores between ethanol and cane liquor, both for the overall appearance (p = 0.083), as well as for the nucleus and cytoplasm (p = 0.157 and p = 0.371, respectively). however, for the extracellular medium, it was significantly higher (p = 0.025) concerning the cane liquor. therefore, the quality of staining generated in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and overall histological image by cane liquor was significantly comparable with ethanol in hydrated and dehydrated tissue sections, which implies that this ecological alternative can be used in histotechnology and laboratories, provided it is validated by experts in histology and histotechnology so that it can be used without problems in general diagnosis.
