challenges of translating persian books of islamic lawsinto english

In this study, challenges in the translation of islamic shi’a texts of practical laws were investigated. the english translations of the books of islamic laws written according to three iranian twelver shi’a mujtahids namely, grand ayatollah wahid khorasani, grand ayatollah sistani, and grand ayatollah makarem shirazi were examined. next, the culture-bound terms concerning practical laws of religion in the three english translations were looked at to see what kinds of procedures have been used by different translators and which procedure(s) is/are the most frequent one(s). the results of this study indicated that the challenges found in the translation of islamic law texts could be classified into two groups: lexical challenges and structural challenges. moreover, it was found out that the main challenges include islamic words, culture-specific items, units of measurement, common words with uncommon meanings, fixed expressions, and modal verbs. in addition, it was found that the translators of these texts have used six procedures more than others and those are transliteration, literal translation, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent and recognized translation. the analysis of examples in this research suggests that among all procedures, the translator, in most cases, has used transliteration and literal translation to cope with the lexical gap.

چالش های پیش رو در ترجمه‌ی رساله های عملیه به انگلیسی

در اینجا، چالش­ های پیش رو در مسیر ترجمه ­ی احکام شرعی مذهب شیعه­ ی دوازده امامی مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است. در این تحقیق، ترجمه ­ی انگلیسی رساله­ ی عملیه ­ی سه تن از مراجع جهان تشیع یعنی آیات عظام وحید خراسانی، سیستانی و مکارم شیرازی مورد بررسی و مطالعه قرار گرفته است. واژگان فرهنگ­ حصار در زمینه­ ی احکام شرعی در این سه ترجمه با یکدیگر مقایسه شدند تا مشخص شود که مترجمان چه راهکارهایی را در امر ترجمه به کار بسته­ اند و اینکه کدامین راهکار بیشتر مورد استفاده قرار گرفته است. نتایج بررسی مذکور نشان داد که چالش­ های پیش رو در ترجمه ­ی احکام شرعی را می­توان به دو گروه تقسیم کرد: چالش­ های واژگانی و چالش­ های ساختاری. افزون بر این، مشخص گردید که چالش­ های اساسی در روند ترجمه­ ی احکام شرعی عبارتند از: واژگان اسلامی، اجزاء فرهنگ­ حصار، واحدهای اندازه­ گیری، واژگان رایج با معنی غیررایج، اصطلاحات و ترکیبات خاص، قیدهای حالت بایستگی. و نیز نتایج بررسی­ ها مشخص نمود که مترجمان این سه کتاب، شش راهکار را بیشتر از راهکارهای دیگر به کار برده ­اند. این راهکارها عبارتند از: نویسه­ گردانی، ترجمه ی واژه به واژه، بهره­ گیری از معادل فرهنگی، استفاده از معادل کاربردی، به کار بردن معادل وصفی و ترجمه­ های متداول و مصطلح. پس از بررسی نمونه­ های این تحقیق روشن شد که از میان همه­ ی راهکارهای موجود، در بیشتر موارد مترجمان نویسه ­گردانی و ترجمه ­ی واژه به واژه را بیش از سایر راهکارها به منظور مقابله با شکاف واژگانی به کار گرفته ­اند.
