consecutive interpretation training: challenges and solutions

Consecutive interpreting (ci ) requires a lot of parallel cognitive and affective processes, which are challenging for the interpreter who has to deal with them concurrently . this study focuses on the problems trainee interpreters encountered in their ci sessions. an analysis of the strategies they used to weigh whether they have been successful in completing their task is also given. the sample of the study consists of 50 senior students of translation enrolled in ci course (english-arabic) in the fall semester 2018/2019 at the translation department at yarmouk university, jordan. the source text (st), which was divided into one-minute period for each time, was given to students for interpretation and then the target text (tt) was recorded. most of the challenges encountered by trainee-interpreters were linguistic problems, memory problems, note-taking and reproducing the st into the tl. it is imperative therefore that interpreter training should be as effective as possible and interpreters should develop a series of skills and strategies such as chunking and joining, shadowing, anticipating, listening and recalling and paraphrasing that can be used to solve the problems encountered.

آموزش ترجمه شفاهی پیاپی: مشکلات و راهکارها

ترجمه شفاهی پیاپی مستلزم غلبه کردن بر چالشهای شناختی و احساسی زیادی می باشد که می توانند برای مترجم شفاهی که مجبور است همزمان با همه اینها دست و پنجه نرم کند مشکل آفرین باشند. تحقیق حاضر قصد دارد مشکلات دانشجویان مترجمی در کلاس ترجمه شفاهی را مورد بررسی و راهکارهایی که دانشجویان برای مقابله با این مشکلات به کار می برند را ارائه دهد. بدین منظور، 50 دانشجوی ترم آخر مطالعات ترجمه که در کلاس ترجمه شفاهی ترم پاییز2019/2018 دانشگاه یرموک ثبت نام کرده بودند شرکت کنندگان این تحقیق را تشکیل دادند. متن انگلیسی که به قسمتهای یک دقیقه ای تقسیم شده بود جهت ترجمه به عربی به دانشجویان داده شد و سپس ترجمه های آنها ضبط گردید. تحلیل داده ها نشان داد که اکثر مشکلات دانشجویان مربوط به مسائل زبانی، مشکل حافظه و یادداشت برداری وعدم توانایی بیان آنها در قالب زبان عربی بود. نتایج نشان داد که تربیت مترجم شفاهی مستلزم این است که مترجمان مهارتها و راهکارهایی از قبیل تقسیم متن، پیش بینی، تقویت قدرت شنیداری و حافظه و قدرت تفسیر خود را در حل مشکلات مذکور تقویت نمایند.
