ادبیات بومی نوعی از ادبیات است که شرایط زیستی و بومی یک منطقه، آداب و رسوم و عقاید و باورها، فرهنگ، مناسبات و روابط اجتماعی، مذهبی و غیره را که بر آن منطقه حاکم است، منعکس می‌کند. گرایش به این نوع ادبیات در میان داستان‌نویسان معاصر فراوان دیده شده است. احمد محمود نویسندۀ برجسته رئالیست ایرانی است که توانسته به نحو مطلوبی عناصر بومی منطقه جنوب ایران را در آثار خود بازتاب دهد. آشنایی عمیق وی با فرهنگ مردم سواحل خلیج ‌فارس و بهره‌گرفتن از عناصر بومی مناطق جنوب ایران، آثار وی را از منظر ادبیات بومی و اقلیمی قابل بررسی و تامل نموده است، به همین دلیل جستار حاضر به بررسی ادبیات بومی در آخرین اثر این نویسنده که رمان درخت انجیر معابد است، می‌پردازد. دستاورد پژوهش که با روش توصیفی- تحلیلی و بر مبنای مطالعات کتابخانه‌ای انجام شده، نشان می‌دهد که احمد محمود در درخت انجیر معابد آداب و رسوم، عقاید و باورها، لهجه و گویش مردم جنوب ایران را در کنار تاریخ و جغرافیای طبیعی و انسانی این منطقه به تصویر کشیده است که این امر بیانگر آگاهی و تسلط عمیق وی بر جنبه‌ها‌ی مختلف تاریخ، جغرافیا و فرهنگ مردم ساکن جنوب کشور است.
