Abstract
one of the pivotal subjects in the early history of islam is the territorial expansion of the islamic state following the prophet’s migration to medina along with his companions. this stands in contrast to the period of the prophet muhammad’s mission in mecca, during which such success in theexpansion of islam and the formation of an islamic state had not beenachieved. a variety of analyses both from intra-religious perspectives andsociological viewpoints have been offered regarding the factors underlyingthe muslims’ success in medina. however, these studies have rarelyaddressed the combined impact of medina’s environmental and socialconditions on the expansion of the prophet’s state territory. in this study, aninferential-analytical approach grounded in historical documentation andsupported by deductive reasoning is employed to explore a range ofenvironmental factors that played a role in stabilizing and expanding theborders of the islamic state after the migration to medina. the findings of thestudy indicate that, in comparison to mecca, the city of medina benefitedfrom better access to water and arable land, which contributed to a multinucleusurban structure and a more balanced distribution of political poweramong its resident tribes. this socio-environmental context significantlyfacilitated the acceptance of islamic thought within the city. the geopoliticalcapacity of medina’s location to interfere with the mecca–levant traderoutes served as an additional factor to undermine mecca’s commercialactivities. moreover, the policy of involving bedouin tribes from outsidemedina in military campaigns and granting them a share of the spoils of warled to a fusion of nomadic and urban livelihood patterns, thereby generatinga strategic capacity that facilitated the expansion of the prophet’s state duringthe final years of his mission.
