a triangulated analysis of the english language needs of iranian eap undergraduate physiotherapy students

Considering the leading role of needs analysis (na) in english for academic purposes (eap) courses and the necessity of reconsidering such courses in iran, this study was designed to investigate the present and target academic english language needs of undergraduate physiotherapy students through triangulation of sources and methods. to this aim, data were elicited from 132 undergraduates, 20 graduates working as physiotherapists, 20 content teachers, and 9 language teachers at four medical universities in tehran. the quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through two versions of an na questionnaire and semistructured interview protocols, respectively. the findings indicated that, although most of the skills and subskills in target needs were considered important or very important by all the stakeholders, there were differences in the preferences and priorities of different groups. the results of the selfassessment section also revealed the skills in which the students need improvement. the findings also signified some issues and options in eap courses for physiotherapy students and promise implications for refining and enhancing eap courses and materials through triangulating the multiple points of view on the students’ target needs and demands of their present situation.

تحلیل سه‌جانبة نیازهای زبان انگلیسیِ دانشجویاِن ایرانی کارشناسی فیزیوتراپی با اهداف دانشگاهی

با توجه به نقشِ مهم نیازسنجی در دوره‌های انگلیسی با اهدافِ ویژة دانشگاهی و لزومِ بازنگری این دوره‌ها در ایران، پژوهش حاضر با سه‌بعدی‌سازی روش‌ها ومنابع پژوهش، به بررسیِ نیازهای کنونی و نیازهای آتی زبان انگلیسیِ دانشگاهی دانشجویانِ کارشناسیِ فیزیوتراپی می‌پردازد. به همین منظور، داده‌های کمی و کیفی پژوهش از 132 دانشجوی کارشناسی، 20 دانشجوی کارشناسی ارشدِ مشغول به کار، 20 استاد فیزیوتراپی، و 9 استاد زبان تخصصی از 4 دانشگاه علوم پزشکی در تهران با استفاده از 2 نسخه پرسش‌نامة نیازسنجی و مصاحبة نیمه‌باز گرداوری شدند. نتایج پژوهش نشان داد که با وجود مهم یا خیلی مهم بودن اکثر مهارت‌ها و ریزمهارت‌های هدف برای همه گروه‌های حاضر در پژوهش، در اولویت‌بندی‌های گروه‌ها تفاوت‌هایی وجود داشت. نتایج بخش خودارزیابی همچنین مهارت‌هایی که در آن‌ها دانشجویان نیاز به تقویت داشتند، را مشخص کرد. یافته‌های تحقیق، همچنین مسائل و راه‌حل‌هایی برای دروس زبان تخصصی برای دانشجویان فیزیوتراپی را بررسی می‌نماید و از طریق مثلث‌سازی نظراتِ گروه‌های مختلف در مورد نیازهای هدف و نیازمندی‌های شرایط کنونی دانشجویان، پیشنهاداتی برای بهبود و ارتقای دوره‌ها و منابع آموزشی ارایه می‌نماید.
