qadamgah-i imam reza in neyshaburstudy of the evolution and alteration of the tomb, garden and avenue

Abstract    statement of the problem: the ghadamgah of imam reza (ali ibn musa al-reza) near the city of neyshabur is among the places he is believed to have passed through during his journey from medina to marv. this historical complex includes various elements such as a garden, boqa, bathhouse, caravanserai, post office, cistern, and avenue. historical evidence (written sources and the inscription on the structure) indicates that the complex was built during the reign of shah abbas of the safavid dynasty and underwent interventions during the reign of shah suleiman. however, a closer examination of written sources and the plan's ground layout raises doubts about this assumption. the boqa's resemblance to timurid-era structures and accounts of this village from the 10th century ah suggest that the ghadamgah complex may be older than previously thought. moreover, the process of its formation and development remains unclear.research question: to which historical period does the ghadamgah complex date back, and what has been the course of its transformations?research objectives: this study aims to clarify the historical background and the formation and evolution of the ghadamgah complex by consulting relevant sources and documents.research methodology: the present research is based on a historical strategy. data collection was carried out through documentary methods via library research. the study investigates the ghadamgah complex and compares its boqa with similar examples to uncover its historical background and developmental trajectory.the most important findings and conclusion: by examining comparable examples in terms of ground plan, decorative elements, and structural details—and comparing these with the ghadamgah boqa alongside a more detailed review of written sources—this research shows that the ghadamgah complex is older than previously assumed. it appears that the boqa was not built during shah abbas's reign, but rather in the timurid era or the early years of the safavid dynasty. this claim is further strengthened by historical sources from the early 10th century ah, which refer to the village as ghadamgah, whereas it had earlier been known as esparis
