چکیده    Regarding the growing trend of multidrugresistant strains of staphylococcusaureus, the search for alternative and novelantimicrobial agent has been intensified. forthis purpose, the present study was carriedout to investigate the antagonistic effect ofthe brown seaweed sargassum angustifoliumon growth and virulence factors of s.aureus. a typical microdilution assay wasperformed to monitor inhibitory effect of s.angustifolium extraction on growth of thebacteria within a 6-h period. furthermore,real-time pcr assay with specific primerswas conducted to evaluate the impact ofextraction on expression of genes encodingstaphylococcal enterotoxins (sea) and capsuleformation (cap8). the results revealedthat s. angustifolium extract inhibited bacterialgrowth in a dose-dependent way; sothat bacterial growth was fully stopped atthe end of the assay. antibacterial effectwas enhanced by increasing in s. angustifoliumextraction concentration. the resultsof real-time pcr assay indicated seaweedextraction was able to decrease virulencegenes expression significantly. again, by increasingextraction concentration, strongerinhibitory effect was observed. as a whole, the findings of this study suggest that s. angustifoliumextract has potent antimicrobialeffect that can be used for development ofnew generation of anti-staphylococcal medicines.
