Abstract
soil contamination with heavy metals is a significant environmental concern due to its potential to enter the food chain through plant uptake or infiltrate surface and groundwater, thereby posing risks to human and ecological health. these metals are stable and can accumulate in soil by binding with organic and inorganic matter, eventually entering the human body via ingestion, inhalation, or dermal contact. this study aimed to investigate the concentration of heavy metals in 108 soil samples collected from agricultural lands along the zayandeh rud river in isfahan, iran. the study area comprised agricultural fields adjacent to the zayandeh rud river in the sajzi and gavkhoni plains. soil samples were collected from at least 108 points downstream of these agricultural lands. data analysis was performed using excel and spss, and soil pollution was evaluated through environmental indices including the enrichment factor (ef), geoaccumulation index (igeo), pollution coefficient (cf), and ecological risk index (ri). results indicated that the average geoaccumulation index for the five analyzed metals was 0.126, classifying the soils as uncontaminated. the mean ecological risk index was 13.925, suggesting a low ecological risk, while the mean pollution coefficient was 2.0235, indicating a moderate pollution level. the average enrichment factor was 2.242, highlighting a need for further investigation. overall, heavy metal contamination in the studied soils was generally not of serious concern. despite the absence of severe contamination, neglecting proper soil and water management or other pollution sources, such as agricultural pesticides, could lead to future environmental challenges. therefore, the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices alongside regular monitoring is critical to safeguard soil health, maintain production resources, and ensure long-term food security. this study provides a valuable reference for future research on soil contamination management in agricultural regions.
