Abstract
soil quality is influenced by both inherent factors such as parent material and climatic conditions, and acquired factors, including soil management practices and land-use changes. therefore, a comprehensive understanding of these factors and their interactions is essential for achieving sustainable soil management. the present study was conducted to investigate the long-term effects of different agricultural management practices on soil properties in the jiroft plain. four land-use types were selected: uncultivated land (as control), agricultural fields under a potato–onion rotation system, citrus orchards, and greenhouse cultivation. surface soil samples were collected from three different locations, each with three replications. the measured soil parameters included ph, electrical conductivity (ec), sodium adsorption ratio (sar), organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (cec), and available phosphorus and potassium. the results revealed that different agricultural management practices significantly influenced soil characteristics. the highest ph values were observed in agricultural and orchard lands, while the lowest ph was recorded in greenhouse soils. moreover, greenhouse and agricultural land uses led to a significant increase in soil electrical conductivity, indicating elevated salinity and potentially adverse effects of intensive cultivation. conversely, organic carbon content was higher in orchard soils and, to a lesser extent, in greenhouse soils compared to uncultivated lands. the cation exchange capacity was significantly greater in orchard soils than in other land uses, particularly the control, which showed a strong positive correlation with clay content and soil organic matter. furthermore, the concentrations of available phosphorus and potassium were markedly higher in greenhouse and agricultural soils, likely due to the intensive application of chemical fertilizers. overall, the findings demonstrate that land-use changes and agricultural management practices play a critical role in altering soil properties. consequently, continuous monitoring of these parameters is vital to ensure the sustainability of agricultural production.
