Abstract    in this study, rapeseed stalks were used to produce hydrochar and biochar. biochar was produced by heating the stalks at 500°c for four hours. hydrochar was prepared by putting milled canola in teflon covered autoclave containers made of stainless steel, along with deionized water at a temperature of 200 degrees celsius. the absorption of lead was evaluated using different parameters such as ph, contact time, initial concentration of lead and amount of adsorbent. an advanced modelling technique called gene expression programming (gep) was used to predict absorption efficiency. the results showed that for both adsorbents, with the increase of contact time, lead absorption efficiency gradually increased, and finally, biochar reached the maximum absorption efficiency at the equilibrium time of approximately 120 minutes and hydrochar at the equilibrium time of 420 minutes. by increasing the initial concentration of lead, the amount absorbed by the adsorbents increased, but the absorption efficiency decreased due to the saturation of the capacity of the adsorbents. the results of modelling with gene expression programming showed that reducing the number of input parameters from contact time, initial concentration, adsorbent mass and ph to contact time, adsorbent mass and ph has improved the accuracy of the model so that the value of r² in the training phase increased from 0.92 to 0.95 and in the test phase from 0.90 to 0.91. by continuing to further reduce the input parameters to the model to the two parameters of contact time and ph, the accuracy of the model reached the highest level. this simplification led to more accurate predictions, reduced model complexity and reduced costs. the results of the sensitivity analysis also showed that ph and contact time have a significant effect on lead absorption, while the initial concentration of lead had the opposite effect.
