چگونگی شکل ‌گیری آموزه عدالت اجتماعی در کلیسای کاتولیک

تا قبل از شورای واتیکان دوم، بحث عدالت اجتماعی به شکلی نظام‌مند در کلیسای کاتولیک مطرح نبوده است و غالباً تحت تاثیر تعالیم پولس بر عدالت فردی و معنای الهیاتی آن تاکید می‌شد. عدالت در عهد قدیم افزون بر اینکه فرایندی مبتنی بر اطاعت دیده می‌شد، ناظر به جنبه‌های اجتماعی هم بود. حضرت عیسی (ع) عدالت را شرط ورود به ملکوت دانست و این بدان معناست که عدالت فقط جنبه فردی ندارد؛ اما پولس بر عدالت فردی تاکید می‌کند که به واسطه ایمان به مسیح و از طریق فیض حاصل می‌شود. به همین دلیل عدالت احتماعی بعد از پولس جایگاه چندانی در مسیحیت ندارد. در دوره قرون وسطا، در الهیات توماس آکویناس رویکرد عقلی به عدالت مطرح می‌شود و از قرن نوزدهم به‌ویژه در قرن بیستم، وقایعی در مسیحیت رخ می‌دهد که کلیسای کاتولیک به‌تدریج برای بازیابی هویت خود، به مسائل اجتماعی و عدالت‌محور سوق پیدا می‌کند: مطالبات اجتماعی از جمله حقوق کارگران، نظریه‌پردازی الهی‌دانان کاتولیک در دوره مدرن، اتخاذ رویکرد آکادمیک به اخلاق اجتماعی و ظهور الهیات رهایی‌بخش آمریکای لاتین، موجب شکل‌گیری آموزه عدالت اجتماعی در کلیسای کاتولیک شد.
