رقابت هیئت‌های تبشیری در ایرانِ عصرِ قاجاری و پیامدهای آن تقابل میسیون‌های آمریکایی و اروپایی در آذربایجان

ایران در سراسر سده نوزدهم میلادی به‌ویژه در اواخر آن با افزایش فعالیت میسیون‌های خارجی به یک میدان تبلیغی متراکم و رقابتی تبدیل گردید. در میان آنها مبلغان آمریکایی از بدو ورود به کشور ایران با چالش‌های متعدد مواجه بودند که همه آنها از موضوع تبشیر در میان گروه‌های مختلف جامعه ایرانی ناشی نمی‌شد. در واقع افزون بر مقاومت عقیدتی، موانع دیگری نیز بر سر راه‌شان وجود داشت که از هم‌چشمی هیئت‌های تبلیغی خارجی اعم از کاتولیک، پروتستان و ارتدوکس با میسیون آمریکا در ایران سرچشمه می‌گرفت. مقاله حاضر بر اساس پژوهش کتابخانه‌ای و نیز بهره‌گیری از روش توصیفی- تحلیلی می‌کوشد که ضمن تبیین رقابت‌ مذکور، تاثیر آن را بر روند فعالیت مبلغان آمریکایی مورد مطالعه قرار دهد. دستاوردهای پژوهش نشانگر آن است که میسیونرهای آمریکایی با داشتن انگیزه و منابع مالی لازم و همچنین با توسل به شیوه‌های گوناگون، ضمن دفع کارشکنی‌های هم‌کیشان غربی، با موفقیت نسبی به فعالیت‌های تبشیری خود ادامه می‌دادند

competition of missionary boards in qajar iran and its consequences: the confrontation of american and european missions in azerbaijan

throughout the 19th century, particularly in its later years, iran, due to the increased activity of foreign missions, became a crowded and competitive scene for religious propagation. among these, american missionaries faced various challenges from the very beginning of their arrival in iran. these challenges were not limited solely to the issue of proselytizing christianity among different strata of iranian society. in fact, in addition to ideological resistance, other obstacles existed in their path, stemming from the competition among foreign missionary boards active in iran; boards such as catholic, protestant, and orthodox missionaries who rivaled the american mission in iran. the present article, relying on library research and employing a descriptive-analytical method, attempts to examine this competition and study its impact on the activities of american missionaries. the findings of this research indicate that american missionaries, possessing sufficient motivation and financial resources, and also utilizing diverse methods, were able to relatively successfully continue their missionary activities while confronting the obstructionism of their western co-religionists
