formulaic sequences in learners’ spoken english: a comparative corpus- based study between native and non-native speakers of english

Formulaic sequences are commonly employed in general and educational communication, and come up with the construction of rationality in talking and non-verbal language, in addition to playing an essential role in the conception of communication. the current study examined the rate of formulaic sequences among competent non-native university students, structurally and functionally. notably, a comparative corpus-based study was conducted to probe the accomplishment of formulaic sequences through administering the conversation in group discussions between native and iranian speakers of english. for this purpose, four-word formulaic sequences were drawn out from a corpus of 21 group discussions and were categorized following biber et al. (2004) taxonomies. michigan corpus of academic spoken english (micase) was employed as a native corpus. the results uncovered that native speakers employed more formulaic sequences than efl peers. besides natives utilized ‘discourse organizing bundles’ in functional classification, and ‘noun and prepositional phrases’ in structural classification. however, non-native speakers used ‘stance expressions’ in functional classification and ‘verb phrase fragments’ in structural classification. the outcomes present various educational suggestions for efl teachers and learners.

عبارات چندکلمه ای در گفتار زبان آموزان: مطالعه مقایسه ای مبتنی بر تحقیق پیکره ای افراد بومی و غیر بومی

عبارت های چند کلمه ای  معمولاً در گفتگوهای عمومی و دانشگاهی مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند و باعث ایجاد انسجام در گفتار و زبان نوشتاری و همچنین درک مطلب می شوند. این مطالعه میزان ساختارها و کارکردهای عبارت های چند کلمه ای را در مجموعه‌ای از بحث گروهی دانشجویان غیربومی در مقطع کارشناسی دانشگاه‌ها بررسی کرده است. این مطالعه یک تحقیق پیکره ای است که گفتگوهای چند نفره بین زبان آموزان ایرانی و افراد بومی را مقایسه کرده است. برای این منظور، عبارت های چهار کلمه‌ای از مجموعه 21 بحث گروهی استخراج شد. برای استخراج اطلاعات مربوط به عبارت های چندکلمه ای از پیکره یا همان کرپس (micase) به عنوان پیکره بومی استفاده شد. پس از استخراج، عبارت های واژگانی بر اساس نظر بایبر و همکاران (2004)؛ طبقه‌بندی ساختاری و عملکردی شدند. نتایج نشان داد که افراد بومی از عبارت های واژگانی بیشتری نسبت به همتایان غیر بومی استفاده می‌کنند. علاوه بر این، افراد بومی از عبارات سازماندهی گفتمان بیشتری در طبقه‌بندی عملکردی، عبارات اسمی و حرف اضافه در طبقه‌بندی ساختاری استفاده کردند. در حالی که، زبان آموزان غیر بومی اغلب از عبارت های واژگانی به عنوان عبارات موضعی در طبقه‌بندی عملکردی و عبارات فعلی در طبقه‌بندی ساختاری استفاده می‌کردند. این نتایج می تواند برای برخی از معلمان زبان و زبان آموزان انگلیسی مفید و مورد استفاده باشد.
