english for medical purposes in iran: needs analysis, challenges, and prospects

The present study set out to gain insights into the status of english for specific purposes (esp) in iranian medical schools with five primary aims including deciphering the main challenges of teaching esp, analyzing medical students’ needs and lacks, evaluating esp practitioners, examining the efficacy of esp courses, and analyzing the proper time of offering esp courses. data were gathered through questionnaires, observations, and interviews with medical students, esp teachers, and medical professionals. the findings suggested that inappropriate materials, low motivation and self-confidence of the students, and heterogeneous esp classes were the main challenges of teaching esp to medical students. in addition, while the participants believed the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing were imperative for medical professionals, they were not practiced systematically in esp courses. moreover, it was found that the esp teachers did not apply the basic principles of esp teaching, and the courses were not as efficient as expected. finally, the participants expressed contradictory views on the proper time for offering esp courses. the findings contribute to the understanding of esp principles to be incorporated in esp classes.

انگلیسی برای اهداف پزشکی در ایران: بررسی نیازها، چالش ها و انتظارات

تحقیق حاضر جهت بررسی کامل موقعیت دروس زبان تخصصی برای اهداف ویژه در دانشگاه های علوم پزشکی ایران انجام گرفت. اهداف اصلی این مطالعه عبارت بودند از بررسی نیازها و کمبودهای زبانی دانشجویان پزشکی، چالش های تدریس دروس زبان تخصصی، کارایی دروس زبان تخصصی، ارزیابی اساتید زبان تخصصی و زمان مناسب ارائه این دروس. داده ها از طریق پرسشنامه مشاهده و مصاحبه با 140 دانشجوی پزشکی، 18 استاد زبان تخصصی و 11 پزشک و دندانپزشک جمع آوری شد. یافته ها نشان داد محتوای آموزشی نامناسب، انگیزه و اعتماد به نفس پایین دانشجویان و ناهمگونی کلاسها چالهای اصلی تدریس دروس زبان تخصصی پزشکی بود. هم چنین با وجود اینکه تاکید دانشجویان بر هر چهار مهارت زبان انگلیسی بود، این مهارت ها به شکل نظام مند در کلاسها تمرین نمی‌شد. به علاوه یافته ها بیانگر این بود که اصول پایه تدریس انگلیسی برای اهداف ویژه توسط اساتید رعایت نمی‌شد و کلاسها آنطور که انتظار میرفت کارامد نبودند. در نهایت نظر شرکت کنندگان در مورد بهترین زمان ارائه دروس انگلیسی برای اهداف پزشکی مغایر و متفاوت بود.
