Abstract    in verse 41 of the al-anfal chapter, the instances of khums allocation are mentioned: three shares are designated for god, the messenger, and the near relatives, while the other three shares are for the needy, orphans, and stranded travelers. an examination of recent shiite exegeses regarding the intended meaning of the needy, orphans, and stranded travelers reveals differing opinions among the exegetes such that some consider the allocation of half the khums exclusively to the impoverished bani hashim as a misinterpretation of the verse, arguing that in addition to fostering a perception of discrimination against other needy people, this view contradicts other quranic verses and certain narrations. given that this interpretive disagreement can significantly impact the rulings related to khums, this study aims to evaluate the arguments of two later exegetes, tabatabaii and sadeqi tehrani, through a comparative analysis. the findings of the research indicate that tabatabaii’s arguments, relying on verse five of the al-ahzab chapter to establish the lineage of the sādāt and the “awsākh” narrations to prove the specification of khums to the sādāt in order to preserve their dignity, lack sufficient strength, and sadeqi tehrani’s arguments proving that the categories of the needy, orphans, and stranded travelers are not exclusive to the sādāt are stronger.
