Abstract    the verses related to divine will ( mashīyyat ) are among the debated verses of the holy quran. the apparent differences in these verses have led commentators to present varying opinions regarding how god’s will is connected to human actions. verse 17 of surah al anfāl is one such verse. somecommenta tors have viewed this verse as indicative of predestination ( jabr ), while others haveconsidered it evidence of human free will ( ikhtīyar ). this article seeks to answer the followingquestions about the discusse d verse through an analytical comparative approach within the scopeof shiite and sunni exegeses: based on the apparent meaning of the verse, how can the directattribution of actions to god and the ascription of free will to humans be reconciled? what are thecommentators’ opinions on this matter, and what criticisms can be raised against them? whichtheory is the most suitable for interpreting this verse? the findings indicate that somecommentators, based on the apparent meaning of the verse, have consid ered it evidence for thedoctrine of predestination. others have inferred the interference of god’s will in human voluntaryactions. among these, the theory of human manifestation of god’s actions can be regarded as thebest interpretation
