Frequency of bone marrow infiltration in children with hodgkin’s lymphoma in children’s hospital

Background: relative frequency of hodgkin’s lymphoma in children as compared to adults has been shown to be higher in developing countries as a study in pakistan showed hodgkin’s lymphoma to be seventh leading malignancy among patients of all age groups but second commonest malignancy among paediatric age group. staging is an important prognostic factor and ultimately defines the course of disease,choice of therapy,its outcome and disease free survival in patients. hodgkin’s lymphoma is having a favourable outcome in most cases and this emphasizes the significance of this study even more. this frequency will be helpful for the utilization of our limited resources more effectively. objective: the objective of the study was to determine the frequency of bone marrow infiltration in children with hodgkin’s lymphoma. subjects and methods: settings and study design: department of haematology and transfusion medicine of the children’s hospital ‖ institute of child health,lahore. it was a cross-sectional study. methodology: we selected 50 patients of hodgkin’s lymphoma of 1-18 years of age. bone marrow with trephine biopsy was performed on these patients. frequencies,percentages,mean and standard deviation were obtained results: frequency of presence of bone marrow infiltration in children with hodgkin’s lymphoma shows 18% (n=9) subjects positive bone marrow infiltration and the rest of 82%(n=41) were not found with bone marrow infiltration. conclusions: the results of our study reveal that the frequency of bone marrow infiltration in children with hodgkin’s lymphoma is higher in population of pakistan as compared to developed countries. © 2015,pakistan pediatric journal. all rights reserved.
