Introduction: neonatal sepsis is one of the common causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity in developing countries. it is estimated that 20% of all neonates develop sepsis, and it is responsible for 30-50% of total neonatal deaths, directly or indirectly,in developing countries. objective: to determine the frequency of bacteriological agents of neonatal sepsis in a tertiary care centre and to determine their pattern of culture sensitivity. study design: cross sectional descriptive study. place and duration of study: the study was conducted from june to december 2012 at neonatal icu, department of pediatrics lahore general hospital. sampling technique: non-probability: purposive results: in this study total 320 cases were studied. blood cultures of all these cases were sent for culture of micro organisms. out of 320 cases,51.25% were males and 48.75% female babies. 64% (205) were premature while 36% (115); were full term babies. out of 320 blood samples sent to microbiology lab total 90 cultures were positive (28%). 256 (80%) had early onset (before 7th day) and 64 (20%) had late onset sepsis. in positive cultures, pseudomonas was most occurring bacteria 43% and most f these strains were sensitive to piptaz, meropenum, amikacin and ceftazidime. other isolated organisms were e.coli 14.4%,klebsiella 12%,staph aureus 11%,candida 7.8% and acinobacter 6.6%. conclusion: isolates in high number of organisms like pseudomonas aeruginosa, candida, and acinobacter depicts higher incidence of nosocomial infections in labor rooms, nurseries and nicus of tertiary care hospitals. it stresses upon the need of highly skilled as well as high powered infection control committee in these hospital. © 2015,pakistan pediatric journal. all rights reserved.
