|
Aim: to determine the frequency of various microorganisms in patients of empyema thoracis developing as a complication of bacterial pneumonia. methods: this descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at department of pulmonology,bahawal victoria hospital,bahawalpur from july 14,2010 to january 13,2011. in this study,102 patients with empyema thoracis were included. results: out of 102 patients,growth was seen among 79 (77.5%) patients. out of those 79 patients,the following were results: streptococcus milleri in 26 (32.9%) patients,klebsiella pneumoniae in 19 (24.1%) patients and bacterioides in 12 (15.1%) patients. conclusion: streptococcus milleri is the most common causative microorganism detected in patients with empyema throacis.
