Prevalence of depression in patients of acute coronary syndrome

Aim: to determine the frequency of depression in patients of acute coronary syndrome. study design: prospective study place and duration: department of cardiology,bahawal victoria hospital,bahawalpur,from january 2015 to june 2015 methodology: one hundred and eighty patients admitted with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome were enrolled in the study. the enrolled patients were screened with patient health questionnaire (phq 9) for the presence and severity of depression. patients who had phq 9 score ≥ 10 were labeled to have depression. the data was entered and analyzed with spss version 17. results: mean age of the population was 54±14 years. out of 180 patients,122(67.8%) were males. the prevalence of depression in acute coronary syndrome was 19.4%. depression was more common in females. the prevalence of depression in stemi,nstemi and ua were 19.8%,19.1 %,and 19.2% respectively. conclusion: a considerable number of patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome have co-morbid depression. screening should be done to find depression in this population for earlier intervention.
