Bacteriological quality of drinking water in schools of peshawar,khyber pakhtunkhwa

Objective: to determine bacteriological quality of drinking water in schools of district peshawar,khyber pakhtunkhwa,pakistan. material and methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of community medicine,khyber medical college,peshawar,pakistan from january 2017 to may 2017. a total of 30 samples of drinking water from government and private schools were collected and analyzed for coliform count and e.coli in the public health laboratory khyber medical college,peshawar. multiple test tube method was used to detect total coliform count while mac-conkey broth media was used to detect e.coli results: among all samples 19 (63.3%) were positive for e.coli. in samples from government schools,e.coli was detected in 11 (73.3%) out of 15 samples while in private schools samples e.coli was detected in 8 (53.3%) out of 15 samples to be contaminated with e.coli. total coliform count was alarming and was positive for 29 out of 30 samples. conclusion: e.coli was detected in water samples of government as well as private schools. comparing quality of water in government and private schools,less samples were positive for e.coli in private schools. © 2017,khyber medical college. all rights reserved.
