a semantic analysis of saying 205 of nahj al-balāgha based on the union of the intellect and the intelligible in transcendent philosophy

Authors naghibi jishani mostafa
Abstract    this study aims to offer a rational interpretation of saying 205 of nahj al-balāgha and addresses the question: what is the nature of the relationship between the soul (nafs) and its cognitive forms (ṣuwar ʿilmī) such that the soul itself expands during the act of cognition? the research adopts a descriptive-analytical method and is conducted through a library-based approach. based on the distinctive principles of transcendent philosophy, the following findings are attained: 1. the foundational principles of peripatetic philosophy are insufficient for interpreting this narration, as they regard the human soul as possessing a fixed essence from birth to death. 2. according to several principles of transcendent philosophy, such as the soul's substantial motion, the unity of the soul and its faculties, and the unity of the intellect (al-ʿāqil) and the intelligible (al-maʿqūl), every time the soul gains knowledge of a thing, it becomes that thing. therefore, the more knowledge it gains, the more it expands and this is precisely the meaning conveyed in this narration. 3. the soul is also unified with its moral traits and dispositions; thus, the more it develops in acquiring such traits and dispositions, the greater its capacity becomes to accept further traits and dispositions of the same kind.
