Blood and blood components transfusions in intensive care unit [Yoǧun bakim ünitesinde kan ve kan ürünleri transfüzyonu]

Objective: the aim of this study is to evaluate the transfusion of blood and blood products for anemia in intensive care unit patients,and to pei form a review of the literature on this subject. method: 350 cases whose medical records were analyzed retrospectively,were included in the study. among the cases admitted to the intensive care unit due to respiratoiy insufficiency,postoperative care and trauma,cases under the age of 18 and with a duration of stay at the intensive care unit of less than 48 hours were excluded from the study. the patients' reasons for hospitalization,demographic characteristics,apache ii score,hemoglobin,hematocrit and platelet value at the time of admission,duration of stay in the intensive care unit,duration of mechanical ventilation and mortality were recorded. results: the length of stay at the intensive care unit and the duration of mechanical ventilation were significantly longer in patients who received transfusions. the mean hb measured prior to all transfusions was 7.93 dl'. conclusion: we have concluded that transfusions were frequently performed in the intensive care unit for various reasons,especially among cases with trauma and long-term hospitalization,and that commencing transfusions at an hb value of 7-9 dl' did not affect the mortality rate.
