Objective: the aim of this study is to compare the antiemetic effects ofketamine and propofol sedation used for spinal anesthesia during cesarean deliveries. method: sixty women who underwent elective cesarean deliveries were included in this prospective randomized double-blind study. following routine monitorization, subarachnoid anesthesia was administered with 10 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine and 30 meg fentanyl via 27 gauge quincke needle at the l3-4 or l4-5 interspace in the sitting position. after clamping the umbilical cord during cesarean section, infusions consisting of propofol (20 mg bolus injection followed by a maintenance infusion of 1 mg kg' sa',n=30) for group p and ketamine (0.25 mg kg'1 bolus injection followed by a maintenance infusion of 0.5 mg kg'' sa',n=30) for group k were started. systemic blood pressures, nausea and vomiting were recorded in all patients. results: this showed that compared to propofol, ketamine was more effective in controlling nausea and vomiting with less effect on systemic blood pressure conclusion: low-dose ketamine infusion is more effective than propofol for controlling nausea and vomiting during cesarean section under spinal anesthesia.
