Sedation with propofol in pediatric outpatient dental treatment [Günübirlik pediyatrik dental tedavilerde propofol ile sedasyon deneyimlerimiz]

Objective: outpatient anesthesia is a major component of dentistry and propofol is frequently used during dental procedures. this study is aimed to document the results of propofol use with deep sedation in pediatric dental procedures. method: pediatric patients who had dental procedures with sedation were included in the study. asa i patients aged 16 years or less who had dental therapy between july 2008 and january 2013 with sedation were retrospectively studied. propofol infusion was initiated while the patient was spontaneously breathing. patients were kept in recovery room and then discharged following procedure at the same day. results: study group included 547 patients with 326 (59.6%) male and 221 (40.4%) female patients. mean age was 6.01 ± 2.27 years. complications obsen'ed were laryngospasm (10%),agitation (3.5%),and allergic reaction (0.7%). intubation was required in 2.4%. mean anesthesia and recovery times were 66.3 ± 24.2 minutes and 36.6 ± 12.4 minutes,retrospectively. conclusion: for pediatric patients undergoing dental procedures,propofol would be used as a safe agent which provides early recovery. early awareness of minor complications is important to decrease side effects.
